  • Measure, trim and fold the endpapers.
  • In the proper direction, place an endpaper at the beginning and at the end of the block.

Tasks

  • Receive instructions from the person in charge.
  • Measure the body of the block and determine the dimensions for the boards and book cloth.
  • Cut the boards and spine inserts to size.
  • Measure the book cloth and cut it to size according to the type of binding (full binding, three-quarter binding or quarter binding).
  • Outline the boards and spine insert on the book cloth.
  • Spread glue on the book cloth using a roller, a brush or a gluing unit.
  • Place the boards and the spine insert on the book cloth on top of the glue.
  • Cut the book cloth at the corners.
  • Fold in the book cloth: tuck in the cloth on the inside of the cover, use the bone folder to flatten out the cloth and remove any air bubbles or surplus glue.
  • Reuse the book cover (front, back and spine) from the original book: photocopy or trim the cover to fit the new binding; glue it on the front, back and spine of the new cover, on top of the cloth; and apply an adhesive plastic film to protect it. Optional task or competency
